Too Late: Judge Wortham Has Second Thoughts On New Courthouse Security System
“I have always believed that this was the people’s courthouse. And with that said, I think we are spending a whole lot of taxpayers’ money when we’ve never had any real sense of danger here. The taxpayers built this building and they should not be hampered in their ability to use it. It is their courthouse. I don’t see where we need the degree of security that we’ve gone to. I think it was the right move to put two bailiffs in the criminal and domestic-relations courts but this security plan, with the searches and metal detectors and X-ray machine — the taxpayers are paying for all of this.”
----58th District Court Judge Bob Wortham quoted from the Beaumont Examiner 12/14/08
So where was Judge Wortham these two when the Court Jester along with the rest buffoni that make up Jefferson County's Commissioners Court hatched the plan for courthouse security earlier this year? Why didn't he speak up then?
After Ford Park, the fiasco with the baseball fields, the money the County spent on four new boats outfitted with machine guns they the County can't afford to man or run, the County money making scheme that charged people for a sticker to put on their license so they could return to the County post hurricane that wasn't required for re-entry for either of the two September evacuations, the unflattering public temper tantrum of Judge Walker during a press conference following Hurricane Ike, the screw up and cover up of some incorrect elevations in LaBelle that is now costing tax payer money to buy out the unwitting homeowners, you'd think everyone, EVEN DEMOCRATS, would now realize the County can't get anything right.

A Tale of Two Beaumont City Councilmen
The other day I was having a neighborly conversation with another fellow about living in the North End and he summed up why he lives in the North End as this: "...that's why I live in the fuckin' 'hood, no one tries to tell me what color to paint my house."
Mid-November, there was a meeting concerning some zoning changes in the Old Town. Beaumont City Councilman and Planning and Zoning Commissioner Marty Craig who resides in Old Town was quoted in the Enterprise saying the following: "I take pride in my neighborhood and it distresses me when I see people with a washer and dryer on their front porch. Sometimes I think we give people too much leeway. It's a disappointment."
Of course, Ms. Craig is referring to the houses closer to 4th St. and behind Central High School where the poor people, mostly black and Hispanic, reside.
Apparently, Ms. Craig finds some aspects of poverty distasteful. Did it occur to Councilman Craig that maybe that's the only place they have to put a washer and dryer and does Ms. Craig realize that to some, even having your own washer and dryer is a luxury?
Maybe you SHOULD move to Thomas Road, Councilman Craig.
On the other hand, we have Beaumont City Councilman Audwin Samuel.
Audwin has made mistakes in the past.
Just before Ike hit Audwin went into the neighborhoods east of Pine Street to help warn the residents there of the storm surge and the life threatening flooding it could cause in those low-lying neighborhoods close to the river.
Audwin Samuel cares about the people in his ward, Marty Craig cares about the appearance of hers.
